Goal Setting Flashcards
objective goal
attaining a specific standard of proficiency on a task within a specified time limit
subjective goal
general statement of intent (specific)
Types of goals
- Outcome
o Focus on the outcomes/competitive results
o ‘Product orientated’
o Based on social comparisons - Performance
o Specify end products of performance
o Can be achieved relatively independently of others - Process
o Specify behaviours/actions in which the performer will engage in during performance
o Involve improving form, technique, strategy
advantages & disadvantages of types of goals
direct mechanist view
- direct attention to important elements of the skill performed
- mobilise efforts
- prolong persistence
- development of new learning strategies
indirect thought-process view
- lowered anxiety
- greater confidence
- improved self-regulation
- being better at coping with failure
SMART targets
Specific = clear & concise
Measurable = criteria to determine goal achievement
Achievable = not too easy or impossible
Relevant = the goal should be worthwhile
Time bound = start date & target date (clearly defined timeline)
effective goal setting via goal setting principles
specific goals
o Focused & easy to understand
o Individuals should know exactly what they are trying to achieve
o Easier to see whether/when goals are achieved
difficult but realistic goals
o Too easy = little value if no effort needed
o Too hard = frustration & reduced confidence
o Challenge the individual but not impossible
long-term vs short-term goals
Long term = provide direction
Short term = maintain focus & progress
there should be a balance between…
… performance, process & outcome goals
mastery approach goal
‘improve by X seconds’
mastery avoidance goal
‘don’t X like last time’
performance approach goal
‘finish in X place’
