glycolysis Flashcards
1
Q
glycolysis anaerobic or aerobic process?
A
Anaerobic process because oxygen is not consumed
2
Q
inputs to glycolysis
A
- a molecule of glucose
- 2 ATP
3
Q
net output from glycolysis
A
- produces 2 3-carbon molecules of pyruvate
- a net total of 2 molecules of ATP (uses 2, synthesizes 4)
- 2NADH
4
Q
how is ATP in glycolysis synthesized
A
substrate level phosphorylation
5
Q
overall goal of glycolysis
A
- break down glucose i.e. being oxidized
- extract the energy from this reduced form
of carbon in several steps - synthesize high ATP & NADH (an electron
carrier) - create pyruvate – a molecule that can be
used in different pathways.
6
Q
phase I
A
- energy investment phase
- add phosphate group to our glucose molecule
- 2 ATP used to phosphorylate a 6C sugar with 2 negatively charged phosphate groups
7
Q
phase II
A
- energy payoff phase
- 4 ATP made by substrate level phosphorylation
- transferring protons from phosphate to ATP… extract energy from it!` - 4 electrons removed (from G3P) to reduce 2 NAD+ to 2 NADH
8
Q
how many electrons can each NAD+ pick up
A
2, which are carried by hydrogens
