GLP-1 agonists Flashcards
What are examples of GLP1 agonists?
- Exenatide
- Liraglutide
- Lixisenatide
What are contraindications for GLP1 agonists?
- Pregnancy / breast feeding
- Gastrointestinal disease e.g. inflammatory bowel disease
- Ketoacidosis
- GFR < 50
- History of pancreatitis
When would you want to use GLP1 agonists with caution?
- Elderly
- Hepatic impairment
- Renal impairment
- Pancreatitis
- Women of childbearing age
- Thyroid Disease (Liraglutide)
What is the mechanism of action of GLP-1 agonists?
GLP-1 agonists act by mimicking the action of GLP-1, which causes increased insulin secretion, reduced glucagon secretion and slows gastric emptying. These are resistant to enzymatic degradation so have a much greater biological half-life.
How are GLP1 agonsits administered?
SC injections
What are adverse effects of GLP1 agonists?
- Gastrointestinal upset
- Pancreatitis
- Injection site reactions
- Anaphylaxis
Do individuals taking GLP-1 inhibitors lose weight?
Tend to lose weight, but can be problematic if too quick
Do GLP1 inhibitors cause hypoglycaemia?
No
