What are relative contraindications to COCP use?
- Adequately controlled hypertension
- Migraine

- BMI > 35
What is the mechanism of action of COCP?
- Stops ovulation
- Increases thickness of cervical mucus
- Thins endometrial endotherlium
What are side effects of the COCP?
- Weight gain
- Acne
- Mood changes
- Headache
- VTE
- Breast cancer/cervical cancer
- Lighter periods
What are the benefits of using COCP?
- Controls periods
- Reduces pain during menstruation
How can COC be administered?
- Pill
- Patch
- Ring
How is the COCP administered?
3 weeks on, 1 week off - pill in the morning
What cancers does the COCP increase the risk of developing?
- Breast
- Cervical
What cancers does COCP decrease the risk of developing?
- Endometrial
- Ovarian
If someone taking the COCP missed one pill, what would you advise they do?
Take ASAP, even with next one
If someone taking COCP missed two consecutive pills, what would you advise they do?
Take 1 pill immediately and use a condom for 7 days
If someone on COCP missed two consecutive pill in the first week of the packet, what advice would you give them?
Take last pill with the currrent days pill, and will need emergency contraception if had sex in pill free interval or 1st week of pill packet
If someone on COCP missed two or more pills in the second week of their packet, what would you advise?
Take last pill with pill for that day (even if it means 2 in one day) and use condoms for 7 days, with no further action on top of this
If someone on COCP missed two or more pills in week 3 of the packet, what would you advise them?
Take last pill and current pill, and omit the pill free week
