Artefact
An object that could be used as a starting point or to signify context and meaning
Backstory
Providing history to a character or plot before the events begin
Cutting
The changing back and forth between scenes or episodes of action
Freeze frame
A technique where a character can reveal something to the audience while all the action freezes
Hot seating
When an actor answers questions while in role to gain a deeper understanding of their character
Improvisation
Performing quickly in response to something or acting without previous planning
Role play
Pretending to be an already clearly defined role without performing to an audience
Role reversal/role transfer
When actors swap the roles they are playing to gain a different view during rehearsal
Role-on-the-wall
A figure of a role is drawn and facts about the character are written inside, opinions are written outside
Still image
Creating a picture of a frozen moment or to sum up the drama
Stimulus
An artefact used as a starting point for devising performances
Storyboarding
A series of images showing the sequence of action for a play
Tableau
A general ‘stage picture’ in a scene or used to describe a pause onstage
Teacher-in-role
When a teacher or leader of a drama group plays in role
Technique
Refers to drama forms, exercises and strategies to develop understanding and explore meaning
