Comedy
A performance to amuse and entertain the audience
Epic theatre
Features include a lack of tension and breaking the theatrical illusion
Expressionism
A style which places greater value on emotion than realism
Forum theatre
Actors could stop and ask the audience for different actions to change what they are seeing
Melodrama
A dramatic work that is exaggerated to appeal to emotions
Metatheatre
Comedy and tragedy where the audience laughs and feels empathy at once
Naturalism/naturalistic
A performance that attempts to present characters and events on stage as in real life
Physical theatre
Performances that incorporate dance elements into dramatic theatre
Realism
A decision to present the audience with an accurate depiction of the real world
Style
The way actors perform, the visual characteristics and the choice of convections used
Stylised
The process of emphasising elements of the design or characteristics of a role
Symbolism/symbolic
Using symbols to suggest and communicate meaning to the audience
