Q

What is the atmosphere made of?

A

 The atmosphere is made up of 21% oxygen and 71% nitrogen. Other gases are
present but in very small proportions.
 Water vapour is an important component of air because it is responsible for cloud
formation and precipitation. We measure its quantity as relative humidity (%).
 The air also contains suspended solid particles that come from the surface of the
earth (dust, soot, pollen, smoke, droplets, etc.)

Q

What is the greenhouse effect?

A

The greenhouse effect is a natural process that allows the Earth to keep some of the
heat it receives from the sun. Some greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, water vapor,
methane, and nitrous oxide. Without the greenhouse effect, the average temperature of the
Earth would be -18.

Q

How does the greenhouse effect work?

A
  1. Most of the sun’s rays are absorbed by the lithosphere.
  2. Once the ground is heated, it emits infrared rays into the atmosphere and some
of those rays escape back into space.
  3. Greenhouse gases trap some infrared rays and send them back to earth, heating
    its surface even more.

Q

What causes climate change?

A

human activity emits too many greenhouse gases, it can
cause the atmosphere to trap too much heat from the sun. This causes global warming and
can lead to changes in patterns of climate, precipitation, and wind. These changes in
climate are affecting many ecosystems and the animals and plants living in them.

Q

Where does Co2 come from?

A

CO 2 is the product of burning fossil fuels. Excessive combustion of fossil fuels (cars
and factories) has caused too much CO 2 to be released into the atmosphere. Clearing
land for farming also contributes to increased levels of CO 2 in the atmosphere. When
forests are burned or trees are cut down, the carbon stored in their decomposing
remains eventually turns into CO 2 .

Q

What does methane come from?

A

Methane gas causes a greenhouse effect 21 times greater than CO 2 . Methane comes
from the digestion of farm animals, manure storage, rice fields, and decomposing
household wastes.

Q

How can you reduce your greenhouse gasses admissions?

A
  1. Green your commute. Use public transportation, car pool, use electric vehicles, etc.
  2. Use energy wisely. Buy energy efficient appliances, unplug devices when you are not
using them, buy a thermostat, insulate your home well and wash your clothes in cold
    water.
  3. Consume less, waste less.
  4. Take a stand against fossil fuels.
  5. Invest in renewable energy sources.
  6. Vote! Make sure green politicians are elected.
