Global Warming Flashcards
What is global warming?
An increase in the overall temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere caused by an increase in the level of carbon dioxide and other pollutants.
What is carbon dioxide classified as?
Carbon dioxide is known as a greenhouse gas.
How does the sun contribute to global warming?
The sun emits short wave high energy UV radiation which heats up the Earth.
What happens to the Earth’s surface after it absorbs solar radiation?
The surface of the Earth then radiates long wave infrared radiation which is absorbed by the bonds in carbon dioxide.
What effect do the vibrations of carbon dioxide bonds have?
These vibrations give out heat in all directions into the atmosphere.
What are some problems caused by global warming?
Polar ice caps melt, sea levels rise, and extreme weather events occur (droughts, floods, and heat waves).
