Baron Pierre de Coubertain to bring countries together for healthy competition devoid of politics, the first Olympic Games was held in 1896

How did De Coubertain get the idea of the Olympic Games?

A

Visited his friend Dr Penny Brooks who lived in Much Wenlock and watched the Wenlock Games which was a pre-industrial fair of pastimes and games for the school, he also went to see the public school fixtures which inspired him to recreate the unison of sport on an international stage

A

Tommie Smith and John Carlos demonstrated the black power salut during the medal ceremony wearing black gloves and socks, removing their shoes to resemble poverty. All three podium athletes wore the OPHR badges (Olympic Project for Human Rights)

Smith and Carlos were booed when leaving the stadium, the IOU suspended them from the US team and banned them from the athlete village for enforcing politics against game values, their families received death threats
