Global issues - Climate change Flashcards
physical causes of climate change
(5)
sun spots - big black spots that appear and sunspots can increase and decrease earths temp. caused when suns magnetic field changes.
Sun flares - increase earths temp
Tilt of earths axis- every 41,000 yrs the tilt of earth changes. Greater tilt means more sunlight in polar reasons
permafrost melting - ancient bacteria and viruses are released. Previously trapped methane is released too, methane counts fro 20% of enhanced greenhouse affect
Ocean currents - retreating ice caps release fresh water leading to changes in ocean current
Volcanoes - large amount of ash released during eruption shield the earth from sun rays - decrease temp. for example Mount Pinatubo in 1991 caused a global dip
the milankovich theory - earths orbin changes
likley to appear
Effects of climate change (6)
Hungary - due to longer and more frequent droughts demand for water increases. Puts too much pressure on underground water systems and the water supplies.
Holland - rising oceans - the country will experience flooding on coastal areas
Australia - due to temp of sea water increasing the coral is bleaching in the great barrier reef - coral bleaches as photosynthesis ceases and the coral dies
Egypt - bad air pollution caused around 18000 premature deaths. Decreases life expectancy too with people living there
South Africa - warming atmosphere so higher chance of droughts. Impact on crops as they cant grow, leading to starvation
America - hurricanes will increase in magnitude. Houses would become damaged and inhabitable due to floods and wind. Increasing homelessness and displacement
Responses to climate change
protect nature - Brazil will eliminate illegal deforestation from 2028 - allows more trees to capture Co2 and greenhouse gases from atmosphere - will decrease jobs as people who work in forest clearing will be put out of work.
Co op internationally - 2015 Paris agreement - agreed to limit global warming temp rise by 1.5c - many countries have agreed to this although no logistics on how to do so
Germany are actively working towards zero waste. China has started planting trees.
Australian PM Anthony Albanese - signed climate change act for net zero by 2050 - more than what previous government done.
just stop oil protests in america and paris - informs people of dangers of oil and use of fossil fuels - greta tumberg
Human causes of climate change (5)
The consumption of beef - cows burp methane which adds to green house gas affect - one one of biggest countries for this is China
CFC’s in aerosol cans like deodorant - releases harmful chemicals - big countries for this is India
Deforestation - for instance in Brazil with the amazon rain forest - trees release trapped Co2 when cut down
Population growth - India - more people means more resources needed. The mass production is harmful especially if certain materials like plastic packaging for food
conflict -the warfare releases CFS with the bullets and mortary fire - in Ukraine with Russia
Urbanization
