Glaucoma π Flashcards
1
Q
Types of glaucoma 2
A
- Primary open angle glaucoma
- Primary angle closure glaucoma
2
Q
What is Primary open Angle Glaucoma?
A
= Decreased aqueous drainage
3
Q
Primary angle closure glaucoma?
A
Chronic
Gradual closure of anterior chamber
4
Q
What is Aqueous Humor produced by?
What are the 2 modes of drainage?
A
Produced by = Ciliary bodies
2 modes of drainage:.
A. Tranecular outflow (90%)
B. Uveoscleral outflow (10%)
5
Q
What are the Diurnal variations? 2
A
- Production of Aqueous humor DECREASE 50-60% at night
- INCREASE IOP at night (partly due to positional changes)
6
Q
Symptoms of Open Angle Glaucoma
A
Early stage = asymptomatic
Later = loss of 30% of axons = tunnel vision (loss of peripheral vision)
7
Q
Treatments for Open Angle Glaucoma?
A
- Prostaglandin analogues
= Increase UVEOSCLERAL OUTFLOW - B blockers
= decrease AQUEOUS HUMOUR PRODUCTION - Carbonic anhydrase Inhibitors
= decrease AQUEOUS HUMOUR PRODUCTION - Alpha 2 agonists
(Do both)
8
Q
Adverse side effects
A
- Prostaglandin analogues
= irreversible increase in iris pigmentation AND thickening of lashes - B blockers
= hypotension, hallucination - Carbonic anhydrase Inhibitors
= precaution > sulphonamide allergy - Alpha 2 agonist
= ocular irritation, dry mouth and nose
9
Q
Risk of using preservative eye drops in the long term? 5
A
- Causes allergies
- Can cause epithelial toxicity
- Affects corneal healing
- Disruption of twar film stability
- Breaks up lipid layer
10
Q
How to overcome practical issues related to glaucoma treatment? 2
A
- Start meds in one eye only as control
- Avoid 2 drugs from same class
