Prepared for next cycle
Define alopecia
Absence of hair from an area in which it usually grows
Androgenic alopecia: male pattern
Causes?
Genetic predisposition +
Direct effect of androgen on hair follicle
Androgenic alopecia in MEN
Testosterone metabolises to DHT
DHT binds to androgen receptors in hair follicles
DHT activates genes that shortens the growth/anagen phase to weeks to months
Leads to follicular miniaturisation of hair follicles to produce fewer finer hair
Androgenic alopecia
Treatment
Topical = minoxidil
Vasodilator
Increase duration of anagen
For at least 4 months
Androgenic alopecia
Male and female
Systemic treatments
Male = Finasteride
Female = Spironolactone
- Telogen effluvium
Define
Moa
Reactive excessive shredding
Anagen prematurely terminated by triggering event
- Anagen effluvium
Define
Abrupt loss of hair follicles in anagen phase
After physiologic insult, ie. chemotherapy
- Alopecia Areata

Polygenic autoimmune disorder
= circular patches anywhere on the body
