What is a gland?
An organ that produces and secretes hormones
What is a hormone?
A chemical messenger that travels through the bloodstream to target cells and organs
What is testosterone?
Causes male secondary sexual characteristics to develop such as voice-dropping
What is oestrogen?
Causes female secondary sexual characteristics such as hips widening
What is adrenaline?
It prepares the body for the fight for flight or freeze and also increases heart rate and concentration
What gland releases the hormones ADH/Human growth hormone?
Pituitary gland (found in the brain)
What gland releases the hormone Thyroxin (metabolism)
Thyroid (found in the throat)
What gland releases the hormones insulin/glucagon
Pancreas (found in the stomach)

Adrenal (found at the top of the kidneys)

Ovaries (only found in women)

control metabolism
What is the role of ADH?
controls the water content of the body
What is the role of insulin?
controls blood sugar levels
What is the role of FSH (Follicle stimulating hormone)?
Stimulates the development of maturing eggs
What is the role of growth hormones?
Stimulates bone development and muscle growth
What is the role of LH (Luteinising hormone)
causes ovulation
What is an endocrine system?
A hormone system

- relies on the heart
- long duration
