What are the 3 main contraceptives?
Birth control, comdon and implants
What is the barrier method?
- Prevents the egg and sperm from meeting.
- 80-90% affective.
- Most common examples are condom ,cap ,diaphragm and spermicide
- these prevent STIDs and STIs
- could tear.
What are the hormonal methods of contractions?
- Interrupts the menstrual cycle.
- Examples: IUD, Patch, pills (birth control) and implants
- Doesn’t prevent STDs or STIs
- IUDs and implants could cause infections
- reversible
What are surgical methods of contraceptives?
- removal of reproductive organs/tubes
- vasectomy (snip the sperm tube and tie them together)
- Cutting the oviducts (fallopian tubes)
What advantages and disadvantages of the barrier methods?
advantage: 80-90% affective and prevents STDs and STIs
disadvantages: can tear or break if used passes its used by date
What advantages and disadvantages of the Hormonal methods?
Advantage: Inhibits the production and release of the pituitary glands
Disadvantage: Raises blood pressure , breast cancer, thrombosis and if not taken regularly the artificial hormones levels will drop and the body with take over which can result in an unexpected egg release.
What are some of the causes in fertility in women?
- no ovulation
- blocked fallopian tubes
- endometriosis (uterine lining grows outside of the uterus)
- age
- medical problems
What are some of the causes in fertility in men?
- Low/bad quality/no sperm count
- no/sperm tube blocked
- medical problems
describe the process of IVF
- Fertility drugs are given to the woman to stimulate egg maturing and ovulation
- Required surgery from the eggs to be collected
- Collect the sperm
- Mix the egg ad sperm in a petridish
- Embryos checked to make sure they are forming then 1-3 are implanted into the uterus
- If one or more are successfully implanted the pregnancy will continue
What is the main advantage to IVF?
Infertile patients can get pregnant
what are the 4 potential disadvantages if IVF?
- multiple births
- has to have a medical
proceeder - expensive (£30,000 for 1 treatment however the NHS pays for the 1st time)
- Not garnered (emotional trauma)
