glacial transportation and depositional landforms Flashcards
What is moraine
landforms that are left behind after a glacier melts. They are made of till and their position determines which of the four types a particular landform is
What are the five types of moraine
ground, lateral, medial, terminal, recessional
lateral moraine
when an extended mound of till is deposited at sides of glaciers, made of scree from valley edge
medial moraine
tributary glacier joins a smaller one, two lateral moraines merge into one. Ice melts and forms a ridge in the middle
ground moraine
material dragged underneath glacier that’s left behind when it melts
terminal moraine
huge amounts of material built up at the end of the glacier marking maximum extent of ice coversge
recessional moraine
marks where glacier once was as it retreats material is deposited
What are erratics
rocks that have been transported by ice and deposited elsewhere, the type of rock is different to the lithology of the bedrock where the erratic is deposited. Help to identify where i’ve came from
What are drumlin’s
small egg shaped hills of glacial deposition.
features of drumlin’s
steep stoss side, gentle lee side, they can become 1km+ in length, 500m in width and 50 m in height
how are drumlin’s formed
when glacier is carrying material it struggles to carry it all as it starts to melt. Small obstacles have moraine deposited around them. Moraine moulds itself around obstacle. When ice sheet moves over material is shapes it, depending on direction of ice flow
