glacial processes Flashcards
weathering processes
freeze thaw- water freeze in cracks and freezes
more weathering processes
rocks weaken and become easier to be eroded, large angular rocks collect at bottom of mountain which erode when trapped under moving glaciers
erosion processes
abrasion- sandpapering effect as weight of ice scours valley floor leaving smooth surface
plucking- meltwater beneath glacier freezes and bonds base of glacier to rocky surface. glacier moves so loose fragments get plucked away. leaving no rocky surgace
transportation processes
rock fragments from freeze thaw are transported by glacier
sediment/ moraine transported on in or below ice
bulldozing- glaciers push debris dwpnhill
depositional processes
as glacier retreats it leaves a bed of broken rock/ till which is poorly sorted due to lack of water
meltwater rivers carry sediment away. attrition makes rocks smaller sediment is well sorted
glacier movement
meltwater lubricates glacier enabling it to slide - basal slip is sudden in summer
Rotational slip- ice moves along curved surface to enlarge and develop hollows
In winter glacier freeze to rocky surface and weight and gravity cause crystals to change shape
Internal deformation- glaciers slowly move downhill
