coasts Flashcards
what are waves
a disturbance on the surface of the sea or ocean in the form of a moving ridge or swell
what causes waves
energy transferred from wind to the sea which only acctually move forwards in shallow water
what is fetch
the distance a wave travels - the greater the fetch the larger the wave
what effects waves
fetch, wind speed, wind duration
characteristics of constructive waves
Constructive waves have a long wavelength and a low frequency. They have a low wave height, typically, under 1 m. The way front is gently sloping and gains a little heart breaks and spills on to the beach watersports a long way up to gently sloping bitch.
characteristics of destructive waves
Destructive waves destroyed beaches. The waves are usually very high have a short wavelength in a very frequent. The wave has a step front of his typically over 1 m high. The backwash has less time to soak in the sand.
what is mass movement
the downhill movement of cliff material under the influence of gravity. Rockfall landslide mudslide and slumping
