Kyro
Grassy, Coriander, Juniper, Black Pepper

A

“The aroma of coriander comes through along with bright citrus tones and fresh green grass. There’s a pleasant savoriness to it all. On tasting, the base spirit is lean and dry with juniper present, but not overpowering. The finish shows gentle floral notes and a peppery finish.

Sipsmith London Dry
Traditional, smooth juniper, licorice root, peppery,

A

Nose is traditional piney juniper with slight hints of angelica root musk and licorice. distinctive in its own right with orange zest dripped with warmed orange blossom honey lends complexity.

The palate of Sipsmith Gin unfolds in three waves. Juniper with an expressed pine character comes on early, with bright lemon curd, mandarin flesh and citrus mid-palate.

The finish is where some of those spice notes come through. Cassia, cinnamon and coriander merge into a vague, gentle pepperiness. There’s a creamy hint of licorice root that rounds out an herbaceous juniper note with the slightest hint of bitter orange.

Q

Martin Miller’s
Citrus, juniper, fresh cucumber

A

On the palate, there’s more of that same orange zest. Nicely expressed, and not overwhelming though it is dominant. Brisk, pine forward juniper comes forward but so does a smooth, sedate vegetal character that is clearly cucumber, but also oddly sweet and clear. It doesn’t taste like distilled cucumber. It’s as if there’s a fresh cut cucumber right next to you. These notes stick with you as the finish comes on with some pepperiness to it: hints of coriander and cassia perhaps with angelica coming through towards the backend. Finish is quite long and only gently warm.

Monkey 47
Floral, Lavender, Pine, Rosemary

A

The nose is mentholated juniper, pineapple sage, lemon verbena, lavender, rose, hibiscus and lime. (!) This encyclopedic list merely reflects how incredibly complex and brightly aromatic this gin is.
Honeysuckle aroma as it warms.

The palate starts with some minty, herbal notes. Herbaceous juniper, blackthorne, lavender and an acute resiny pine note that comes across as more spruce/rosemary. As the taste progresses, we get peppery, vegetal notes, harmoniously entwined as if a single botanical. The finish, we get oily, aromatic herbs with peppermint leaves, lemon balm, blackberry and a faint pepper and green tomato aftertaste.

Fresh and fruity, with a lot of complicated nuance.

Q

Nolet’ Dry SILVER
Floral, Rose, peach, raspberry, citrus

A

A distillery with such history is an unlikely source for a contemporary gin that has a noticeable lack of juniper. Instead, there is a definite Dutch genever influence in this dry gin that has a fruity and floral profile dominated by rose, peach, and raspberry.

The first thing that gin drinkers notice whether by scent or by taste is that the juniper is muted, almost missing.

The floral scent of Nolet SIlver Gin is over the top. You smell rose when you open the bottle, along with intimations of Lavender and sweet herbal botanicals like melissa and apple mint.

Roku
Juniper, cherry blossom, green tea

A

Roku Gin has a delicate nose with a floral aroma and top notes of cherry blossom. You can also smell green tea, yuzu, lemon, and hints of pepper.

Roku Gin is smooth and oily on the palate with a rich mouthfeel. Once the Gin coats your tongue, you can taste quite strong notes of juniper with hints of cherry blossom. The citrus notes are a bit less dominant compared to the aroma. In contrast, the bitter notes of green tea are far more pronounced.

Roku is flavored with a total of 14 botanicals. Six of them are natural ingredients Japan is famous for. The other eight botanicals are more common and are in many Gins.

Sencha tea
Gyokuro tea

Q

Ft Collins Dry Town gin
Juniper, Lime Citrus, orange, ginger mid, piney finish

A

Very citrusy on the nose at first Dry Town Gin leads with a orange, sweet lime, then hints of lemon leaves and kaffir lime leaves. It opens up with a short time and a spicy, slightly Asian spice undertone emerges. I really enjoy the nose on this gin.

The palate of Dry Town Gin is very bold. Juniper and lime rise early. Lots of citrus, suggesting both lemon and lime. Ginger spikes mid palate before notes of lemon verbena, pineapple sage bring a herbal counterpoint. A really nice balance. Towards the finish angelic and juniper lend a piney gravity as camphoraceous sage notes usher in what is a long and quite nice finish.

A

The bright flavours of citrus, juniper and coriander in Hayman’s Royal Dock make this gin the perfect match for spicy Indian food, as the robust flavours stand up well to the traditional Indian spices.

Q

Gunpowder Gin
Grapefruit, juniper, green tea, cardamom

A

Drumshanbo Gunpowder Gin explodes with flavor on the palate. Citrus once again dominates. This time its grapefruit. Juniper and green tea are present mid-palate: the juniper herbaceous and bright, the green tea calling to mind Jasmine green tea, as you might get before sushi at a Japanese restaurant.

Towards the end though, it turns sweet and spicy/herbal. Anise and cardamom are subtly and expertly played in here. Meadowsweet, especially late and towards the finish lends its a honeyed, vanilla-like nuance.
