GI Tract Flashcards
what is the purpose of the esophagus?
transports food and liquid to the stomach
what are the 3 abdominal membranes?
parietal peritoneum (lines abdominal wall), visceral peritoneum (covers intestinal organs), peritoneal cavity (potential space between containing peritoneal fluid)
what is the mesentery?
tissue folds; vessels and nerves
what is the greater omentum?
the “apron” inferior stomach to over organs
where is the lesser omentum?
superior stomach to liver
what is peristalsis?
alternate contraction and relaxation that moves digestive products through intestines
how is the GI tract innervated?
digestion controlled by parasympathetic NS
- CN X (vagus) and ganglia in pelvic cavity increases activity of GI tract
sympathetic NS decreases activity of GI tract
what takes place in the duodenum?
site of most enzymatic digestion
what takes place in the jejunum and ileum?
site of most absorption
what takes place in the large intestine?
site of most H2O absorption
absorbs/secretes electrolytes and makes feces
parts of the large intestine?
teniae coli: 3 longitudinal muscle strips
haustra: sac-like pouches
sphincters of the GI tract?
cardiac sphincter, pyloric sphincter, ileocecal sphincter, external and internal sphincters of the anus
anal sphincters
internal sphincter - smooth muscle, involuntary
external sphincter - skeletal muscle, voluntary
oral cavity structures
teeth/tongue, parotid glands, pharynx, esophagus
what does the pancreas do?
secretes hormones (blood glucose regulation), bicarbonate and enzymes into duodenum
types of cells in the pancreas
acinar cells: make enzymes
islet cells: 2 types
- beta cells make hormone insulin
- alpha cells make hormone glucagon
what do hepatocytes do?
make bile, process fats, detoxify blood, store glycogen
two distinct blood supplies to the liver
- Hepatic portal vein
- hepatic artery: from aorta
central veins: to vena cava
what does the gallbladder do?
concentrates and stores bile
what is the function of pancreatic enzymes?
breaks down proteins
biliary apparatus
food enters stomach, gallbladder releases bile into cystic duct to common bile duct to duodenum
what are the muscles of the esophagus?
skeletal and smooth muscle
where is the esophagus located?
posterior to trachea
where is the pyloric sphincter?
entrance to duodenum
