Normal bowel sounds
Gurgle, borboygmi 10-30s
Tinkling bowel sounds
Associated with bowel obstruction
Absent bowel sounds
Ileus- lack of movement in intestine= blockage
Auscultation over aortic and renal arteries
Aortic bruits- auscultate 1-2cm superior to umbilicus
Renal bruits- 1-2cm superior to umbilicus and slightly lateral to mid line, bilaterally
Palpation of aorta
Place both hands superior to umbilicus
Normal= hands move superiorly with pulses
Abnormal= hands move outwards with pulses
Palpation of liver
R iliac fossa, edge of ASIS
Palpate superiroly to border og rib cage
Inhale= descends
5-10 ribs (R lobe)
L lobe spans from 5-7 ribs
Spleen
Same as liver but on L
9-11 ribs
Kidneys
Palpate under rib cage ant and post
Press as they breathe
TPs T12-L3
L is higher because of stomach
R is lower because of liver
