What are the risks to women during pregnancy?
Pre-eclampsia, HTN, early delivery, IOL and caesarean section
What are the risks in the neonate?
Macrosomia, foetal death, shoulder dystocia, nerve palsy, hypoglycaemia and respiratory distress
Diagnosis of GDM
75g OGTT at 24-28 weeks in all women not previously diagnosed with diabetes
Risk factors for GDM
Previous hyperglycaemia in pregnancy, age > 40 yrs, ethnicity, family history of DM, pre pregnancy BMI > 30, previous macrosomia, PCOS, corticosteroids, antipsychotics
What is meant by diabetes in pregnancy?
Women who probably have pre-existing diabetes prior to pregnancy
Options for early testing for diabetes in pregnancy?
OGGT (poorly tolerated in early pregnancy), fasting glucose, random glucose, HBA1c
When should women have a OGTT following pregnancy?
6 weeks to 3 months
