Why did producers start to use a Goldkapsule to indicate a higher quality bottling ?
With the 1971 law, terms such as feine, feinste and hochfeine (terms used for ‘‘reserve’’ or special cuvées) became prohibited. Producers who wanted to mention a higher quality bottling then decided to create a different code to differenciate those specific cuvées within the Prädikat spectrum.
Why would a producer decide to bottle a Beerenauslese level wine to a Auslese with a Goldkapsule?
The wine has reached the level of ripeness by the eyes of the law in order to be labeled Beerenauslese, but it shows more varietal character than Botrytis or ripeness character. The producer can then declassify it as Auslese, but with a Goldkapsule, which indicates a higher level of ripeness and quality.
