Geography Maps Flashcards
How are valleys shown on a map?
Contours are far apart,
U or V shaped that points up the valley.
There is usually a river running through it.
How is a round hill shown on a map?
Contours form a circle or an oval with increasing height.
How is a ridge shown on a map?
Closely spaced contours form a long sausage shape.
Define ‘relief’
The shape of the land.
What does a surveyor do when making a map?
The surveyor finds the height on a number of points in the area that is being maped.
What are ‘spot heights’?
A black dot on a map showing the exact height above sea level in metres.
What are contour lines?
Brown lines on a map that join up places of the same height.
If colour is used to show the height of land, what colours are used?
Brown = high ground Yellow = low ground
What do contours that are close together show?
A steep slope.
What do contour lines that are widely spaced show?
A gentle slope or flat area.
What is a map grid?
A pattern of squares on a map to make finding places easier. (Like battleships🤔)
Why do we use symbols on a map?
To save space and
make a map easier to read.
Define ‘straight line distance’.
The shortest distance between two points.
Define curved line distance.
The distance along a road or a river.
What does scale on a map show?
The scale shows us how much the real distance between places has been reduced.
Large scale maps show…..
…the most detail but cover only a small area.
Small-scale maps show…
…less local detail but cover a large area.
Name 3 ways the scale of a map can be shown.
As a simple statement e.g. 10cm = 1km
As a ratio or fraction e.g. 1:10 000
By a scale line 0———200m
How are cliffs shown on a map?
contours are on top of each other or VERY close together
