Urban
A built up area with high population density, e.g. a town or a city.
Rural
Areas in the country with less population density, e.g. villages or smaller.
Urbanisation
Movement from population from rural areas to urban areas.
Megacity
Urban area with population above 10 million.
Informal economy
Economy isn’t well regulated, with no licenses, worker rights. Informally known as a ‘black market’.
Squatter settlement
Area of poor-quality housing lacking in amenities like water supply, sewerage or electricity. Develops in LICs illegally.
Urban decline
Deterioration of inner city caused by lack of investment and maintenance, result of negative multiplier.
Regeneration
Renewal and improvement of a declined area (reusing buildings).
Redevelopment
Changing land use of an area for improvement.
Sustainable
Actions meeting needs of present without reducing the ability of future generations to meet needs.
Environmental sustainability
Protects and improves the environment.
Economic sustainability
City makes enough money to support inhabitants’ needs.
Social sustainability
People are happy and supported by good healthcare and education.
Net zero
Reduction of emissions to as close to 0 by 2050 (remaining emissions absorbed through natural carbon sinks like forests)
Climate
Long-term weather pattern of an area (avg. conditions over 30 years).
Weather
Short-term day-to-day changes in atmosphere at a time and place.
Temperature
Exactly how hot/cold it is
Wind speed
How fast the wind is blowing.
Wind direction
Where the wind is blowing from.
Air pressure
How heavy the air is
Sunlight
Amount of daylight
Cloud cover
How much of the sky is covered with cloud.
Humidity
Amount of water vapour held in the air.
Precipitation
Water falling from the sky in any form.
Cloud type
Weather higher up in atmosphere.
