Geography: Climate Flashcards
What is a cold environment?
A cold environment is an area of land permanently covered by ice. It is covered by glaciers, ice sheets and have frozen soil/rock. The temperature is constantly below freezing.
What is latitude?
The distance from the equator
What is Altitude?
The height above sea level
What is Continentality?
The distance from the ocean or sea
What is a Glacier?
A Glacier is a huge mass of ice that moves slowly over land. It forms when there is a build up of snow over a number of years. They can be found at altitude or sea level. They are known as rivers or ice.
What is the process of Plucking?
Where certain rocks are plcuked from their base by glacial ice. The ice gets into the cracks, and then freezes. When it moves, it plucks some of the rocks away and they stick onto the base of the glacier as it is moved.
Describe the formation of a Corrie.
Snow build up on the north face of a mountainside. It then piles up, pressuring the mountain. The snow moves in a circular rotation, as the underlying rock is eroded.
How does ice melting effect people and earth
By ice melting many areas of the world shall be submerged into water and many shall lose their homes. Land ice will make a much bigger impact adding to the volume of the sea, while sea ice is already accounting for the volume in the sea regardless if it being melted or not.
What is the evidence global climate is changing
Coral reefs, sedimentary rock layers and ocean sediments
Why is our climate changing?Explain the role of human anhanced greenhouse effect.
For the few year humans are increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane within the atmosphere by buring fossil fuels and deforestation such as trees and foodwaste.
Why is are climate changing, what has the carbon cycle got to do with it?
The biggest changes in the land carbon cycle are likely to come because of climate change. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas and there is to much of it which does not allow heat to leave earth. This increases temperatures, extending the growing season and increasing humidity.
