Genitourinary System Flashcards
What compose the genitourinary system?
kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra
What path does urine take as it is leaving the body?
urine is manufactured in the kidneys, then it travels through the ureters to the bladder where it is stored until it is secreted through the urethra
What are the kidneys responsible for?
filtering blood, creating urine, stabilizing water balance, maintaining blood pressure, and producing vitamin D
What is the functional unit of the kidney?
the nephron
What are the two major regions of the kidney?
the cortex and the medulla
What is the purpose of the glomerulus and where is it located?
it is located in the renal cortex and it filters blood and forms a dilute plasma (which is concentrated in the proximal and distal convoluted loops)
Where are salt and water reabsorbed to make urine and where is it released?
proximal and distal convoluted loop, it is released into the collecting duct
Where does the collecting duct drained ?
renal pelvis which opens into the ureter
Describe the relationship between the kidneys and the cardiovascular system
cardiovascular system pumps blood into the kidneys through the renal artery and in turn the pressure of the blood helps the glomerulus filter out wastes and return nutrients to the blood through the renal vein
What is the function of the hormone renin?
regulates blood pressure by retaining or removing water and salt
