Anatomy and Physiology Neuromuscular System Flashcards
How does a signal start in an impulse and how does it end?
The signal starts as an electrical impulse and travels along the axon and is transmitted to the next cell using CHEMICAL neurotransmitters secreted into the synapse from the axon terminals
What transmits signals from the central nervous system?
nerves which are long bundles of axons
What nerve sends messages to the central nervous system?
sensory (afferent)
What nerve sends messages to the muscles to contract?
motor (efferent)
What system controls involuntary actions? and is part of the peripheral nervous system
autonomic (involuntary)
What is the structure that allows neurons to pass signals to other neurons, muscles, or glands?
synapse
How does a muscle contract or relax?
actin and myosin slide past each other creating either a contraction or relaxtion
What is a primary component of a muscle?
protein
