Endocrine System Flashcards
What are the major glands of the endocrine system?
pineal, hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid and parathyroid, thymus, adrenal, pancreas, and ovaries and testes
What does the pancreas do?
releases insulin which signals cells to uptake sugar
What hormones are non polar fat soluble and are released in a pattern set by age and development and their effects are long lasting?
estrogen and progesterone
What hormones are poor water soluble are released acutely in response to stress and are short lived?
epinephrine
What can cause metabolic diseases and give examples?
hormone embalances ex: diabetes hyperthyroidism, gigantism
Where do the nervous and endocrine system integrate?
hypothalamus
How is the pituitary activated?
the nervous system receives signals from the sensory system and uses electrical impulses to send signals to the hypothalamus to activate the pituitary
When the pituitary is activated what does it do?
the pituitary sends releasing hormones to other glands in the body that controls their hormone production
How does a gland send a message?
glands send hormones in to the blood and the target cell or organ receives the message by specific receptors
What does the pineal gland secrete?
melatonin
What does the hypothalamus do?
produces and releases inhibiting hormones which allows or stops the production of other hormones
What does the thyroid gland do?
produces hormones that regulate the body’s metabolic rate controlling heart, muscle and digestive function, brain development and bone maintenance
What does the parathyroid do?
regulates calcium levels
Why is the thymus so necessary?
plays a vital role in the development and training of T lymphocytes or T cells
What is the importance of the adrenal glands?
produces hormones that regulate metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, and response to stress
