What are the general complaints of genital diseases/conditions?
Discharge from an orifice, pain, rashes, swellings, lumps, cuts, sores, ulcers, itching, change in appearance
Name some microbial conditions not considered STIs?
Vulvovaginal candidosis, bacterial vaginosis, balanoposthitis, tinea cruris, erythrasma, infected sebaceous glands, impetigo and cellulitis
What is the most common organism that causes vulvovaginal candidosis?
Candida albicans
What are the symptoms of thrush?
Itch, thick “cottage cheese” looking discharge, increased amount of discharge
When are people prone to candida infections?
If they are diabetic, on oral steroids, immunosuppressed, pregnant, of reproductive age *oestrogen = food for yeast
What is found on examination in candida infection?
Fissuring, erythema with satellite lesions, characteristic discharge
What is the treatment for candida infections?
Clotrimazole or fluconazole
What is the commonest cause of abnormal vaginal discharge?
Bacterial Vaginosis
What are the symptoms of BV?
Watery grey/yellow ‘fishy’ discharge, may be worse after period/sex, sometimes sore/itch from dampness
What causes BV?
A bacteria imbalance
What is treatment for BV?
Metronidazole or clindamycin (vaginal only)
