Genetics And Populations Flashcards
What is a stem cell?
An undifferentiated cell that is capable into dividing into more cells of the same type
What are the 4 types of stem cells?
Totipotent, pluripotent, multipotent and unipotent
What are the 4 types of stem cells?
Totipotent, pluripotent, multipotent and unipotent
What stem cells are found in the embryo?
Totipotent and pluripotent
What stem cells are found in mature adult mammals?
Multipotent and unipotent
What sort of illnesses can stem cells treat?
Heart disease, tissue growth, spinal injuries, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s
What can totipotent and pluripotent stem cells develop into?
They can develop into any cells, pluripotent however cannot form placenta
What cells can multipotent and unipotent develop into?
Multipotent can mature into a limited number of number cell types
Unipotent can only mature into one type of cell
What are the advantages of stem cell use in medicine?
May lead to new therapies for diseases, significant advances in basic medical science, chance to generate tissue and organs for transplant and the harm of embryo manipulation and destruction does not outweigh the benefit to be gained by research
What are some of the disadvantages of stem cell use?
Manipulation and destruction of human embryo is wrong in itself, instrumentalisation of human beings and the child as a reflection of the love between a man and a woman
