Genetic Engineering Flashcards
What is genetic engineering?
A process which involves modifying the genome of an organism by introducing a gene from another organism to give a desired characteristic
What happens in genetic engineering?
A sample of the desired gene is cut out from the DNA and inserted in the plant nucleus, the cell and gene divides causing more cells to have that Characteristic
What are pros and cons of genetic engineering in plants?
Pro=increased yields and no problems so far
Con=transplanted genes get into other species and affect food chains
What are some other pros of genetic engineering ?
Pro=medicines can be mass produced and nutrient can be produced e.g golden rice which contains vitamin A, genetically modified microbes reduce global warming
What is good in GM cows and sheeps?
Cows=pruce low lactose milk
Sheeps=produce medicines like growth hormone in their milk
How does the cell divide in GM insulin?
Binary fission
What does recombinant mean?
DNA from different species
What are pros and cons of GM insulin?
Pro=more drugs to supply the growing demand
Less side effects
Con=only works if bacteria are capable of making human proteins
What is taken and cut open in the bacterial cell?
The plasmid
What is the plasmid in teams of transport?
Vector or transporter
What ia another cell for GM insulin?
Virus cells
