Adaptations Flashcards
What are structural adaptations?
Body shape/colour
How are predators and preys adapted in terms of their eyes?
Predators=forward facing eyes
Preys=eyes on side of the head
How are animals adapted in terms of hot and cold?
Hot=large SA : V, excess heat escapes
Cold=small SA : V, less heat escapes
What are factors affecting mating?
Bright colours, horns to fight
What are behaviour adaptations?
Migration, huddling, herding, pack hunting
What are functional adaptations?
Metabolic process going inside the body
Hibernate, produce less urine (conserving water)
What are adaptations in a cactus for water?
Wide reaching shallow roots, leaves reduced=less surface area to lose water from, sunken stomata limits transpiration
How are seeds dispersed?
Wind, attractive fruit (animal)
Float on water (water disperses)
What are extremophiles?
Organisms that live in extreme environment to avoid competition
What are adaptations in salty water?
Mangrove plants prevent salt entering the cells
Bacteria (prevents salt)
What happens if salt gets into the cells?
Osmotic balance is upsetted, fatal
What are adaptations for Hot environments?
Thermophillic bacteria=heat stable enzymes, 80°C
Some bacteria can resist up to -15°C
