identity
an individuals sense of self, influenced by socialisations and interactions; a sense of belonging to a community
personal identity
what makes every person unique, defining them through their specific biographies
social identity
part of the self defined by group membership
subculture
a group within society who share norms, values, beliefs and attitudes that are in some ways different from or opposed to the mainstream culture
mass culture
how culture gets produced. tends to reproduce the liberal values of individuals, boosted by modern communications, rather than arising from people’s daily interactions
high culture
refers to the set of cultural products, mainly in the arts held in the highest esteem by a culture
low culture
refers to gossip magazines, reality television and popular music
popular culture
the traditions and material culture of a specific society. things such as music, art, literature and fashion
global culture
a set of shared experiences, norms, symbols, and ideas which unite people at a global level
nature and nurture
explanations of human behaviour. while not denying the role of biology in explaining some aspects of human behaviour, sociology very much emphasises the role of society rather than nature in explaining human behaviour
