General Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is Photosynthesis?
Process of capturing energy from sun, and using it to make chemical energy
What is the General Chemical Equation for Photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O2 + 6O2
How would you say the Chemical Equation in words?
Carbon Dioxide + Water → Glucose + Oxygen
What are Packets of Light Energy called?
Photons
Why are Plants Green?
Because Chlorophyll A and B absorb Red and Blue light but reflect Green
Why do Plants change color in the Fall?
Chlorophyll gets Denatured
Absorbing light =
Absorbing Energy
What does Absorbing Light do to the Chlorophyll?
It causes electrons to be excited
What is the main Organ that carries on Photosynthesis?
The Leaf
What is a Stoma?
Opening that allows air to enter and leave leaf
Why are Stoma closed during night?
To prevent water loss
What is the Organelle where Photosynthesis occurs?
Chloroplast
What is a Thylakoid?
A membrane bound sac
What is a Granum/Grana?
A stack of Thylakoids
What is a Stroma?
Fluid outside Thylakoids
What is the Thylakoid Space?
Space inside Thylakoid
What is the difference between Stroma and Stoma?
Stroma = Thylakoid Fluid
Stoma = Hole for air
What are the two parts of Photosynthesis?
Light Dependent Reaction and Light Independent Reaction
Where do Light Dependent Reactions occur?
In the Thylakoid Membrane
LIR and LDR are the two processes of…
Photosynthesis
Which process comes first, LIR or LDR?
LDR
What is Photorespiration?
It is a dysfunctional form of Photosynthesis
What makes Photorespiration different from Photosynthesis?
Instead of using CO2, it uses O2, which produces only 1 PGA
What are C3 Plants?
These are normal plants that convert carbon through the LIR
What are C4 Plants?
These are plants that convert CO2 into 4-Cs (CCCC)
What makes C4 Plants unique?
They have their stomates partially closed during the day and only lose 1/2 of water; typically these plants grow faster
What are CAM plants?
Plants that close stomate during day and open during night; store things for Calvin Cycle during the night, and do the Calvin Cycle during the day; these plants grow slowly but lose less water, and hence have chunky leaves
Sunlight is ______ energy
Radiant
What are carotenoids?
Red and Orange colored Pigments
What is chlorophyll?
Green/Blue pigments
Why do leaves change colour in the fall?
Chlorophyll dies, and carotenoids take over
What is the job of the Guard Cell?
To control the opening and closing of the Stomas
List the layers of the plant in order:
Cuticle, Upper Epidermis, Palisade Layer, Spongy Layer, Lower Epidermis
What layer is the vein located in?
Spongy Layer
What are the two key parts within the vein?
Xylem and Phloem
What is the Xylem responsible for?
Transporting Water
What is the Phloem responsible for?
Transporting Food (phloem phood)
What layer is the chloroplast found in?
Palisade Layer
The Chloroplast has ___ membrane(s)
2
Photosystems are a group of ________ in the ________ _________ whose job is to ______ _____
Pigments, Thylakoid Membrane, Absorb Light
What type of macromolecule is a Cytochrome?
A Protein
