Cellular Transport Flashcards
What are the Two types of Transport?
Passive and Active
What are the Three types of Passive Transport?
Diffusion, Osmosis, and Facilitated Diffusion
What does Diffusion mean?
When concentration diffuses over time, until dynamic equilibrium is reached
What is Osmosis?
It is a specific type of diffusion, where it only diffuses water
What are the Three types of Solutions?
Isotonic, Hypertonic, and Hypotonic
What does an Isotonic solution look like?
Where amount of Solute = amount of Solvent
In an Isotonic Solution, when water moves, does the concentration change?
No; Isotonic Solutions have no net movement
What does a Hypotonic Solution look like?
Water > Solute; Where water moves into substance; substance swells
What does a Hypertonic Solution look like?
Solute > Water; Water moves out of substance; substance shrivels
What is the term called when animal cells burst due to increase in internal pressure?
Cytolysis
What is the pressure of a plant cell called?
Turgor Pressure
What is the term called for an animal cell or plant cell when water leaves?
Plasmolysis; it shrinks
What is Facilitated Diffusion?
It’s when Transport Proteins help molecules cross cell membrane
T or F; Facilitated Diffusion is a form of Active Transport
False; it is Passive Transport
What is Active Transport?
Movement against the concentration gradient that requires energy
What are the two types of active transport pumps?
Sodium-Potassium Pumps and Coupled Channels
What is the job of Sodium-Potassium Pumps?
It moves Na+ and K+ ions across membrane using ATP
What is the job of a Coupled Channel?
To transport food and other particles into cell using ATP
What is Endocytosis?
Cell surrounds external material; engulfs it
What are the three types of Endocytosis?
Phagocytosis, Pinocytosis, and Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis
What is Phagocytosis?
Endocytosis of Solids
What is Pinocytosis?
Endocytosis of Liquids
What is Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis?
VIP only-type of Endocytosis (specific molecules for receptors)
What is exocytosis?
Dump contents outside
What are the 7 types of Active Transport?
Active Transport, Endocytosis, Phagocytosis, Pinocytosis, Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis, Pumps, Exocytosis
