Define enabling
A set of behaviors of people who are knowingly supportive of or attempting to assist another person’s attempts at using chemicals
Why do people enable?
- Being a friend
- Peace in house
- Keep addict from anger
Define codependency
A relationship pattern between two people where one is a substance abuser, but both are dependent on each other
What is the difference between enabling and codependency?
Enabling is giving the user the substance, codependency is when the user has an emotional dependence on the user.

How do people become codependent?

What is a Residential Treatment Program (the 28 day concept) used for?
Not a detox facility, used to change the lifestyle/routine/access of the user
What is a 12 Step Program?
Not necessarily AA, but incorporates AA principles in their treatment program
What is a therapeutic community?
A self-help community for treatment of substance abuse, very intensive and can be confrontational at times. Requires a level of commitment from and control over the user.
What is a half-way house?
A place to stay when the user is between the detox facility and living completely on their own; provides rehabilitation counseling and groups usually.
What substances require medical detox?

What is the myth of confrontation?
- The myth is that everything has to be yelling and screaming with substance users
- No evidence that this is useful
What would you want to work on in family and marital interventions?

- The more transparent it is, the healthier it is for everyone

- Usually distorted
- Kids learn rules that will allow them to survive in substance abusing family, but not outside

What are the individual therapy approaches?
- Cognitive behavioral strategies
- Contingency management/Self-monitoring
- Treatment of comorbid disorders
What is the importance of group therapy?
Provides feedback and support from people going through similar issues; teaching coping and social skills
What is harm reduction?
Helping people “use” safely
- Needle exchange programs
- Helping cut back on the substance to decrease negative effects on life
What is Rational Recovery?
Created in response to not liking the spiritual side of AA
