General Knowledge Flashcards
What are the symptoms of detonation?
High and increasing CHT
significant power loss
Engine vibration
Pinging noise
What is the stoichiometric system?
15 parts air to 1 part fuel
Best air to fuel ratio
How would you rectify detonation?
Mixture rich
Reduce engine power
Increase IAS
Land and report
What are the symptoms of pre ignition?
Rough running
Back firing
Rise in CHT
Engine damage
How would you rectify pre ignition?
Mixture rich
Reduce engine power
What are the minimum and maximum oil pressures?
Minimum=45 psi
Maximum=90 psi
Define viscosity
High viscosity = thick and sticky oil
Low viscosity = thin and runny oil
If engine torque is the same as prop torque what will RPM be?
Constant
If engine torque is the greater than prop torque what will RPM be?
RPM will increase
If engine torque is the less than prop torque what will RPM be?
RPM will decrease
Describe fine pitch and what it’s best for?
Small blade angle
Small geometric pitch
Used for low airspeeds and climbing
Define coarse pitch and what it’s used for?
Large blade angles
Large geometric pitch
Used for high airspeeds and cruise
What does the constant speed unit do?
Maintain constant prop by changing pitch of variable pitch through command of governor.
Maintains max prop efficiency
Define feather pitch
Blade chord line is parallel with aircraft relative airflow, minimising drag
Prop stops spinning
Mulit engine planes
What does the governor do?
Maintains constant prop speed
Describe McCauley System
Relies on oil pressure to move pitch to fine.
Seeks fine pitch due to CTM assisted by spring to return prop to fine
Describe Hartzell System
Relies on oil pressure to move prop to fine pitch and counter weight on prop to move to coarse.
What will happen if the speeder spring fails?
There would be no resistance to lifting force generated by fly weight. Governor would sense overspend causing blades to coarsen.
Large drop in RPM and performance
A loss in oil pressure would result in what for the McCauley and Hartzell systems?
McCauley - blades move to fine pitch stop
Hartzell - blades move to coarse pitch stop
What does the standby by battery provide power to?
PFD, ADC (air data computer), AHRS (attitude and heading reference system), Nav1 and Com 1
