Q

On what 3 occasions should a nav accuracy check be required? (indicated on FMGS and DU’s)

What is the limit for a pass/fail of the nav accuracy check?

A

When GPS Primary not available then periodically in the cruise and at 10000ft in descent. When entering MNPS airspace. FCOM

Compare the EPU (estimated position uncertainty) with the RNP if it exceeds then NAV ACCURACY is low. If accuracy is “LOW” (and whenever “NAV ACCUR DOWNGRAD” appears), compare raw data from the tuned navaids with the corresponding FM computed data on the ND or the MCDU PROG page

Q

What is the beta target?

A

If one engine fails, the FAC modifies the sideslip indication slightly to show the pilot how much rudder to use to get the best climb performance (ailerons to neutral and spoilers retracted).
This index appears in blue, instead of in yellow, and is referred to as the beta target. If the rudder pedal is pressed to center the beta target index, the PF will fly with the residual slip, as required by the engine-out condition. Therefore, the aircraft will fly at a constant heading with ailerons and spoilers close to neutral position.

Q

What distance and height should thunderstorms be avoided by?

A

20nm and 5000ft

Never Regard a Thunderstorm Lightly. Avoiding Thunderstorms is the Best Policy
Don’t land or take-off in the face of an approaching thunderstorm. Turbulence wind reversal or windshear could cause loss of control.

Don’t attempt to fly under a thunderstorm even if you can see through to the other side. Turbulence and wind shear under the storm could be disastrous.

Don’t fly without airborne radar into a cloud mass containing scattered embedded thunderstorms. Scattered thunderstorms not embedded usually can be visually circumnavigated.

Don’t trust the visual appearance to be a reliable indicator of the turbulence inside a thunderstorm.

Do avoid by at least 20 NM, preferably on the upwind side, any thunderstorm identified as severe or giving an intense radar echo. This is especially true under the anvil of large cumulonimbus.

Do circumnavigate the entire area if the area has 6/10 thunderstorm coverage.

Do regard as extremely hazardous any thunderstorm with tops 35,000 feet or higher whether the top is visually sighted or determined by radar.

Overflight
Avoid overflying thunderstorms unless a minimum of 5000 ft clearance above the storm top is ensured. When possible, detour between the storm cells of a squall line rather than directly above them. Keep the radar antenna tilted down during overflight to properly assess the most severe cells, which may be masked by clouds formations.

Lateral avoidance
At altitudes above the freezing level, supercooled rain and hail may indicate as only weak radar echoes, which can mask extreme thunderstorm intensity. Avoid weak radar echoes associated with thunderstorms by the following minimum distances:

20000 ft

10 NM

Q

What are the Chicago and Tokyo conventions?

A

The Chicago Convention established ICAO and rules of airspace, aircraft registration and safety, and details the rights of the signatories in relation to air travel. It was signed in 1944 in Chicago.

The Tokyo Convention was signed in Tokyo in September 1963, and was designed primarily to combat terrorism. The convention covers offences against penal law and to any act jeopardising the safety of persons or property on board civilian aircraft while ‘in-flight’. It recognises the certain powers and the immunity of the aircraft commander, who on international flights may restrain any person or persons they have reasonable cause to believe is committing or is about to commit an offence liable to interfere with the safety of persons or property on board or who is jeopardising good order and discipline. The Tokyo Convention gives the commander the right to land and hand over a passenger to the police authorities in countries which are contracting states, when the commander judges that the passenger is a danger to flight safety or in some other way has committed a criminal act on-board.

Q

What flight control law is active in the flare?

A

Flare law, this is a pitch demand law. This requires permanent back pressure on the sidestick.

17
Q

What flight control law is active on the take off roll?

A

Ground law. This is direct law.

18
Q

In cruise flight the rudder trim should generally be between?

A

1 degree right and 2.3 degrees left

19
Q

What do you do if the ground crew report a small leak from the engine drain mast? And where do you find this information?

A

From OMB 2.3.8

Run the engine at idle for 5 mins the. Ask the ground crew to count the number of drops per minute.

20
Q

What are the default RNP values for en-route, terminal and approach and what is the definition of each area?

A

Approach 0.3nm, within 5nm of first waypoint of approach procedure
Terminal 1.0nm, below 15000ft within 51nm and not approach
En-route 2.0nm, outside of either of the above

OMB 2.4.51

Brnav European airspace is RNP5
