gene regulation 2E Flashcards
gene regulation
the control of gene expression
structural gene
segment of DNA that codes for proteins that play a role in the structure or function of a cell or organism
regulatory gene
a segment of DNA responsible for producing proteins that control the expression of genes.
repressor protein
a protein coded by regulatory gene that prevents gene expression by binding to its operator
activator protein
protein coded by the regulatory gene that increases gene expression
operon
cluster of linked genes that all share a common promotor and operator and transcribed at the same time
trp operon
a series of genes within a certain species of bacteria that encodes for the production of the amino acid tryptophan
conformational change
change in 3D shape of macromolecules such as protein
trp operon repression
mechanism for gene regulation where the repressor protein stop the initiation of transcription when tryptophan levels are high
trp operon attenuation
mechanism for gene regulation where the premature ceasing of translation stop transcription when tryptophan levels are high
leader region
segment of DNA or mRNA that immediately precedes the coding region
attenuator sequence
part of leader region that allows attenuation
terminator hairpin loop
loop formed in mRNA in the presence of tryptophan- doesn’t allow transcription of structural gene (3/4)
anti terminator hair pin loop
loop formed in mRNA when tryptophan is not present. allows transcription of structural gene (2/3)
