Gender in education: Home Factors Flashcards
Mitsos and Browne
6 reasons why boys underachieve
1. less strict with boys, more leeway w deadlines
2. more likely distrust classes + sent out- leads to loss learning time
3. culture of masculinity encourages boys to want to appear tough so develop ‘anti-education’
4. decline in male manual work
5. overestimate ability, grades achieve
6. girls spend leisure time complimenting ed whilst boys engage in ‘laddish’ behaviour
mitosis and browne: identity crisis for men
increase in female employment and decline in traditional areas of men’s work, makes difficult for boys to see their future as family’s breadwinner
mitsos and browne: continuing disadvantages for girls in ed
- underrating themselves + lacking confidence
- get less teacher time
- tolerate dominance of boys in classroom
mitsos and browne: criticisms
- don’t discuss how well-based claims are
- tend to list individual points than developing theoretical framework
- much more research needs to be done before firm conclusions reached
