GEL 1.1+1.2 Flashcards
1.1
what is the relationship between ppl and nature (2m)
people and nature have a mutal relationship with each other. they are dependent upon each other.
1.1
how are people dependent on nature 3m
-nature provide essentials like air, food and water for humans to survive.
-for example, living organisms like bees help pollonate corps for a continuous supply of food/
nature provide spaces for recreation and leasiure, allowing people to bond with family and friends, maintaing physical and psychological and social well-being
1.1
how are nature dependent on people 3m
-community promotes importance of sustainable use of the natural envoironment
>people encourage one another to use nearby nature areas in a sustainable manner
-raiseawareness about environmental protection.
for example NParks organise activities for schools during the holidays
1.1
how people and nature mutually affect each other 4m
-nature helps enhance metal health and well-being of people. for example, people gain enjoyment by using the natural areas
-people help nature by preserving nature areas and habitats for the urban wildlife to thrive. this may lead to enhanced overall health of the natural environment
1.1
how nature areas benefit people by lowering air temperatures 2m
-the presence of vegetation increases shade, which help lower air temperatures. -vegetation also cools surrounding air by evaportranspiration.
1.1
explain the process of evapotranspiration 3m
roots absorb water from soil, and water is drawn up the stem to the leaves. water than gain hean from the surrounding air and evaporates from the leaves, thus cooling the surrounding areas
1.1
how nature areas benefit people by removing pollutants 3m
-during phtosynthesis, vegetation absorbs carbon dioxide and other air pollutants and releases oxygen. small particles are intercepted by leaves, and washed to the ground when it rains.
-wet land plants can trap suspended materials and absorb excess nutrients in water, thus imrpoving water quality
absorb CO2+air pollutants, intercept small particles, trap materials+abs
1.1
how nature areas benefit people by providing recreation spaces 3m
-nature areas offers plenty opportunities for outdoor activities.
-firect, frequent interaction can increase health and well-being of people.
-this can lead to a decrease of occurrence of health conditions
1.1
how people bring benefits to nature
-raise awareness about the value of nature areas through encouraging positive behaviour that does not damage nature/ sustainable use of natural areas.
-**organise or participate in conservation efforts **(clean-up programmes to remove pollutants form the environment, help restore natual habitats+ provide heathy environment for species to thrive)
1.1
disadvantages people bring to nature
-soil erosion and damging vegetation. people hike on non-designated trials in nautre areas. this can cause soil compaction which prevents rainwater from infiltating the surface. this leads to higher surface flows and soil erosion, as flowing water washes soil particles away
-people may tample on vegetation, damaging plants and affecting their growth.
-worsening pollution and disturbing wildlife (littering can lead to animals getting cut by metal cans, entangled with plastic containers and bags, consuming plastic, all this may lead to death)
-FEEDING WILLIFE changes in wildlife habits and behaviour
1.1
disadvantages nature bring to people
-harm people due to increase human-wildlife encounters and people unintentionally provoking them, leading to attacks
-limit development of city (CIL)
1.2
what is a sense of place
-reflects relationship betewen people and nature
-it associate meaning+memories
-different people different meanings
-depends on needs, lifestyle, experiences of place
1.2
how people acquire sense of place
-repeated encounters (objects/people) unique features
-memoriable events
-historical and symbolic landmarks (postive/negative memories)
1.2
how sense of place is represented
It is represented through the media like articles and social media posts, which reflects people’s ideas, memories and significance of location.
1.2
how representations of sense of place enhance/ contradict individual sense of place
-different emotions expressed
-sense of place shapes identity
-representations add new layers of meaning> revelalling intersting infro, enhancing sense of place
-negative media portrayal> people may react defensively
