gathering data Flashcards
What are the the two kinds of data?
Primary-data which is gathered directly from the source (by you)
Secondary data-data which already exists (by other people, eg books, journals, previous research)
What is complete data reliability?
all data must be there. eg sales data that misses a month could lead to incorrect decisions.
What is accuratedata reliability?
the data must be correct and truthful. this is easier to get from primary sources
What is a questionnaire?
a series of questions, usually close ended. Can be in paper or electronic format.
Pros and cons of questionnaires
+large data sample in a short space of time
+all asked the same questions-consistent data
-closed questions don’t offer any explanation to answers-misinterpreted
-response rate is often really low
What is an interview?
a one-to-one meeting where an interviewer asks the participant questions. face-to-face/over phone/video conferencing
Pros and cons of an interview
+you can ask follow up questions, giving more detailed answers
+personal contact can elicit greater honesty
-a large amount of time needs to be put into gathering the data
-data from interviews-less quantitative-harder to analyse
what is a focus group?
involves a group of people. the participants answer questions and share ideas as a group in a conversation.
Pros and cons of a focus group
+it is quicker to gather information from a large group
+respondents react to each others answers, providing more detail
