E.coli 0157- Shiga toxin producing
associated with haemolytic uremic syndrome
C.dif infection
most common health care associated illness
increasing incidence
highly associated with clindamycin, but not most common as not commonly prescribed
Treat with oral vancomycin or metronidazole
vancomycin has more efficacy in severe case
consider fecal transplant if recurrent cases
no role for documenting clearance of c.dif
Viral gastroenteritis
more common than bacterial
treatment is supportive
most significant virus is norovirus
Giardia infection
parasite
violent diarrhoea, excess gas, stomach or abdominal cramps, upset stomach, and nausea.
Person-to-person transmission accounts for the majority of Giardia infections and is usually associated with poor hygiene and sanitation.
