HSV encephalitis
A
most common cause of encephalitis
often effects the temporal lobes
MRI is more sensitive than CT
HSV csf PCR
empiric therapy should be initiated
treatment:
acyclovir

VSV encephalitis
A
may occur at the time of infection or with viral reactivation
associated with immune compromised state such as HIV
can cause assocaited vasculopathy and stroke
diagnosed on PCR of CSF
treat with acyclovir
