Gas Exchange Flashcards
What are exchanges surfaces? Give 3 examples.
Exchange surfaces increase the absorption of nutrients into an organism
Roots in plants (water)
Small intestines (glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, glycerol)
Lungs (oxygen)
What are the organs of the respiratory system?
Trachea,Alveoli,Lung,Bronchi,Bronchiole
What is the function of the lungs?
To take oxygen from the air and transfer it into the bloodstream
Explain how the lungs are adapted for their function.
Alveoli make large surface area so there is more membrane for diffusion to happen across
Good blood supply to maintain high concentration gradient
Walls one cell thick to provide short diffusion pathway
What is the function of a leaf?
Photosynthesis
Take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis
Take in oxygen for respiration
How do oxygen and carbon dioxide enter the leaf?
Through the stomata
Compare inhaled air differ and exhaled air.
Inhaled air has more oxygen
Exhaled air has more carbon dioxide
In what direction does oxygen move during gas exchange?
From the alveoli to the blood
In what direction does carbon dioxide move during gas exchange in the lungs?
From the blood to the alveoli
How do oxygen and carbon dioxide move during gas exchange in the lungs?
By diffusion
What is diffusion?
Spreading out of particles from a higher concentration to a lower concentration
