Gas Exchange Flashcards
How gas exchange happens?
When you breathe in the oxygen goes through your trachea, then it separates into 2 and goes into your bronchus and through bronchioles into alveoli. Gas exchange happens in Alveolis
Where the gas exchange happens?
Alveolis
What does trachea do ?
Bring air into the lungs
What is bronchi?
The bronchi are thetwo large tubes that carry air from your windpipe to your lungs
What is bronchiolis?
Bronchioles areair passages inside the lungs that branch off like tree limbs from the bronchi.
What is the function of bronchiolis?
The bronchioles deliver air to tiny sacs called alveoli where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.
What is alveoli
Tiny air sacks where gases are exchanged between the lungs and the bloodstream
What is the function of intercostal muscles?
Aid when inhalation and exhalation
What is diaphragm?
A muscle which contracts and relaxes causing the lungs to expand (get bigger) and contract (get smaller)
How do the lungs adapted for gas exchange?
- Large surface
- Thin walls
- Moist walls
- Lots of blood vessels called capillarea
What is the scientific name for breathing?
Ventilation
What happens when you inhale?
- Intercostal mucles contract moving ribs upwards and outwards
- Air moves into the lungs
- Diaphragm contracts and moves downward
- The volume of ribcage increases
What happens when you exhale?
- Intercostal muscles relax, moving ribcage down in
- Air moves out of the lungs
- Diaphragm relaxes and moving upwards
- Volume of ribcage decreases
What inhale air consist of?
- Oxygen 20.96%
- Carbon dioxide CO² 0.04%
- Nitrogen N² 79%
What is exhale air consist of?
- Oxygen O² 16%
- Carbon Dioxide CO² 4%
- Nitrogen N² 79%
