Ecosystems 2 Flashcards
What is the word equation for Aerobic respiration
Glucose + Oxygen = carbon dioxide + water + energy
What is the word equation for Anaerobic respiration
Glucose (reactant) = Lactic acid + energy ( products)
What does Anaerobic mean ?
without oxygen
What are the similarities of Anaerobic respiration and Aerobic respiration?
- both use glucose as fuel
- both release energy
what are the differences of Aerobic respiration and Anaerobic respiration ?
- Oxygen is only used in Aerobic
- Aerobic produces CO2
- Anaerobic releases lactic acid
- Aerobic produces much more energy
What is the word equation for Fermentation ?
Glucose =ethanol + carbon dioxide
(yeast)
what is the word equation for photosynthesis ?
Carbon Dioxide + water = (light) Glucose + oxygen
CO2+H20=(light) C6H1206+O2
what is fermentation
process in which a substance breaks down into a simpler substance.
what is photosynthesis
photosynthesis is a chemical process used by plants to make glucose and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water using light energy . Oxygen is produced as a by product of photosynthesis. Algae subsumed within plants and some bacteria are also photosynthetic.
process of photosythesis
The plant takes in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere through the stomata on its leaves. Water gets into the plant mainly through the roots and finds its way to the leaves, where photosynthesis occurs. Plant roots are specially designed to draw water from the ground and transport it to the plant leaves through the stem. Chlorophyll, the green colouring matter of the leaf, traps the energy from sunlight as it shines on the leaf. It is worth noting that it is chlorophyll that gives the leaf its green colour. The solar energy is used to break water down into hydrogen and oxygen. Then hydrogen is combined with carbon dioxide to make sugar, which is food for the plant. Oxygen is released as a by product through the stomata.
Name plant minerals
- Nitrates ( healthy growth)
- Phosphates( for healthy roots)
- potassium(for healthy leaves + flowers)
- Magnesium(to make chlorophyll)
what is starch
starch is made up of lots of glucose molecules joined together. It is a storage molecule.
what is stomata
stomata is tiny holes in epidermis ( skin ) of leaf. they control gas exchange by opening and closing and are involved in loss of water from leaves. singular is stoma.
what is chemosynthesis
chemosynthesis is a process carried out by bacteria in which chemicals from deep sea volcanic vents are used to produce glucose.
what is chlorophyll
chlorophyll is the green chemical inside the chloroplasts of plant cells. it enables photosynthesis to take place.
