Bacteria and Enzymes Flashcards
What are enzymes?
Enzymes are biological catalysts which speed up reactions including digestion
What are the three types of enzyme?
Carbohydrase, protease and lipase enzymes
What two groups of enzymes do you know?
Enzymes can be grouped into two types:
Those that break larger molecules apart (like digestive enzymes).
Those that join larger molecules together (like plants making glucose in photosynthesis).
What is active site?
The part of an enzyme that fits its substrate or substrates. This changes shape when an enzyme is denatured.
What is substrate?
A molecule or molecules which fit into the active site of an enzyme.
What does the amylase enzyme break down into?
A sugar called glucose
Where czn you find carbohydrase enzyms?
Mouth, pancreas, small intestine
Where protease enzymes are located?
Stomach, pancreas, small intestine
Where are lipase enzymes?
Pancrease and small intestine
Which molecules speed up digestion?
Enzymes
Do all enzymes break down the food?
Not all enzymes break their substrates apart, some stick them together. Many enzymes speed up reactions outside of your digestive system.
Which part of an enzyme fits into its substrate or substrates?
Active site
What is the term given to an enzyme which has changed shape and will no longer work?
Denatured
Which condition does not denature enzymes
Low temperature
What are the products of the breakdown of lipids
Fatty acid and glycerol
