Gametogenesis Flashcards
Gametogenesis
The series of meiotic and mitotic divisions that occur in the gonads resulting in the formation of gametes; spermatogenesis and oogenesis are both forms of gametogenesis
Gamete
Reproductive cell of an organism
Spermatogenesis
The formation of spermatozoa in animals. Spermatogonia stem cells are formed during gestation and present at birth through to early adolescence in an inactive state, during adolescence, hormones from the anterior pituitary gland cause the activation of these cells and the production of viable sperm
Oogenesis
The differentiation of the ovum into a cell competent to further develop when fertilised. At birth, an ovary contains all the cells that will ever develop into eggs
Primary Oocyte
Diploid. Begin meiosis but remain in prophase 1 until a female matures sexually; once matured a primary oocyte completes meiosis 1 each month to form a secondary oocyte and a structure called a polar body
Diploid
Contains two complete sets of chromosomes
Secondary Oocyte
Haploid formed after meiosis 1
Haploid
Contains a single set of chromosomes
Cytokinesis
The physical process of cell division, divides the parent cell into two daughter cells; is even and almost all cytoplasm goes to a secondary oocyte
Centromere
non-coding, point of attachment of miotic spindles
Telomere
non-coding, offers protection to chromosome; a repetitive DNA sequence
Spindle Fibres
Form a protein structure that divides the genetic material in a cell
