Biodiversity Flashcards
Biodiversity
The variety and variability of life on earth
Ecosystem
A biological community of interacting organisms and their environment
Abiotic Component
Non-living factors (such as water, substrate, oxygen, carbon dioxide) that affect an organism’s ability to survive
Biotic Component
Living factors which include interspecific (other species) and intraspecific (same species) relationships between organisms
Species Richness
The number of different species represented in an ecological community
Species Evenness
Number of individuals of each species, relative abundance
Percentage Cover
Measures how much space a species occupies in an area
Percentage Frequency
Measures the number of times a species is present within a given number of samples
Simpson’s Diversity
A mathematical measure of species diversity in a community, takes into account the number of species as well as their relative abundance
Stratified Sampling
A statistical sampling technique that divides an area into strata (a layer or subsection of a whole) for separate sampling
